“Calorie. What is that?”

Ignorance is not bliss, it is oblivion. What so many of us in developed countries assume to be just basic health knowledge has never even been heard of in many communities around the world. When all the passengers on a sinking ferry boat drown because they never learned to swim; when a simple ACL tear ends an athlete’s career and leaves them injured for life; when teenage girls are obese and diabetic because is is not religiously permissible for them to participate in physical activity - this is when physical education truly matters.

Before 2003, Bhutan did not have a physical education curriculum for their school system. No opportunity for school children to learn about the importance of physical activity, to learn to play team sports, or even to get out and play around. For two years, one of our sports and peacebuilding partners worked tirelessly to produce an effective curriculum for the community. Now, Bhutan’s Ministry of Education uses that curriculum in every government school in the country.
