“Fasma” contacted Sport 4 Peace after she found our web-site - In her own words...

Dear Sarah,

Thank you so much for responding my email and really we are in a terrible situation. I am “Fasma” aged 25 years and I am working with a community based organisation called Youth Achievement Sports for Development (YASD) as a Coordinator. We founded this organisation with the aim of promoting peace and rights of girl child through sports. We are working with Hatcliffe Extension township a informal settlement just 20km on the nothern outskirt of Harare. Girls are facing serious challenges in this community, they are sexually and socially abused, lack access to health care, education, and decent housing.

Hatcliffe Extension is a township of more than 10 000 people of which 40% of them are girls below age of 19 years. People are staying in shacks since the establishment of this settlement in early 2000. Things got worse for this community when the government demolished houses in what was termed Operation Filthy Out, all the families were left homeless. The intervention of United Nations Habitat convinced the government to allocate small pieces of land to build houses. Due to financial and political crisis most of the families failed to build decent shelter. There is no electricity, health facilities, or clean water.

In 2008, most of the girls were abused in the community when there is political violence, the youth militias took advantage of the disorder that was in the country. Most of the girls are still in trauma, it is on this background we founded YASD.

I am currently working with 58 girls aged between 8-19 years. Most of them are attending an informal school in community. All the girls are from Hatcliffe Extension but we are in process of launching our program in Southlea Park soon.

I am working with different stake holders like community leaders, non-governmental organisations and churches. For any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Faithfully Yours, “Fasma”
